The Nissan Leaf, the Volkswagen Passat, and the Toyota Prius all have some kind of battery backup.
But most electric cars have no backup power.
In other words, the car can’t get out of a stoplight or a parking lot if it gets an electric charge.
That’s because an electric motor has no need to recharge itself when it gets close to the ground.
Tesla Motors, the world’s largest electric carmaker, says it has the world in its sights, though it says the company still needs to develop a way to recharge batteries if the car gets in an accident.
