The Tesla Model S was named the inaugural top-selling electric car in the United States in the US.
The car’s first year was a smashing success, topping the sales charts in North America for a year and a half, and the company even sold a few hundred vehicles in the U.S. during the period.
In a press release, Tesla said the car was the top-seller in its segment in North American, and it is “now one of the top sellers in its respective market.”
The Model S has sold 3.8 million units worldwide.
Tesla’s sales and production numbers also made the Model S a global leader in battery technology, and in the last quarter of 2016, Tesla shipped more than 2 million of its battery packs to customers around the world.
The company expects to ship more than 5 million of the new battery packs worldwide in 2019, which would put it on track to surpass the worldwide sales of Toyota’s Prius.
