
Tesla is expanding its car manufacturing in New Jersey, bringing the company’s production facilities here from China.
The New Jersey company said it will build 2,000 to 3,000 Model 3 electric cars each year, bringing its total production of the Model 3 to about 7,000.
Tesla said the expansion in New Brunswick will help build its factory and prepare it for production of its larger, cheaper Model 4 sedan.
Tesla, the largest carmaker in the United States, plans to make up to 100,000 vehicles a year.
New Jersey Assemblyman Mike Kelly, who represents parts of New Jersey’s largest city, Trenton, said Tesla is the first automaker to locate its production here in a significant number of vehicles.
Kelly said the company will begin shipping its vehicles in September, and the cars will arrive in New England in the first half of next year.
Tesla expects to have a plant in New Hampshire and a third in the U.S. in 2021.
Tesla is the world’s largest maker of electric cars.
Its cars, called Model S, Model X and Model 3, have revolutionized the auto industry.
